I was asked to fix a co-worker's Win98 system. IE, which was set up as
their only browser, would give an illegal operations error as soon as you
clicked on the program icon. Therefore, they could not browse the Internet.
I figure a game or demo someone had installed (there were several recently
installed) overwrote a DLL file needed by Internet Explorer. I could not
fix it and I could not think of a way to re-install Internet Explorer, since
all the newer versions (5.x and up) seem to be only available on-line (and
we could not get on-line).
I fixed the problem by downloading (on another system connected to a high
speed pipe) Netscape Communicator, burning it to a CD and installing it on
the ailing computer.
However, besides re-installing Windows 98, was there any other way I could
have tried to fix or reinstall IE 5.x off line??
