~ I'm planning to purchase a new PC which has a free upgrade
~ option available,
~ but I am uncertain which would be a better choice :
~
~ The PC is a Pentium III 1GHz Processor
~
~ 1) free upgrade from 64MB SDRAM to 128MB SDRAM
~ 2) free upgrade from 10GB HDD to 20GB HDD
~
~ The main use of my PC is for graphics/web design works,
~ Internet and office
~ documents. I do not play computer games. I intend to purchase
~ a printer,
~ scanner and a Zip drive at the moment.
~
~ I appreciate any advice, thanks.

Here again, it will depend on the OS you choose. Like I said in my other
post, WinMe runs better with 128MB, while Win98 will run okay with 64. But
if you plan to use Photoshop, Fireworks, or Dreamweaver, Pagemaker, you will
definately want the 128MB from the start. You can always save the files on
floppy to save HD space, but you will run into lock ups if you try to run a
graphics program with something like a WYSIWYG editor and mail program (not
to mention the backgound apps, like A/V).
I've gotten HDs for anywhere from $90 for a 10GB (52k rpm) to $160 for a
40GB(72k rpm). Memory ran about $.75-$2/MB. (http://www.crucial.com/ has
low end prices) If you plan to run many of those programs above, you may
even want to look into boosting your RAM even higher than 128, if possible.
But if you will only be using Frontpage and Paint, then you can get away
with 128.
If you have a choice, I would get a CD-RW over a Zip drive. Mainly because
if you will use the Zip disk only for yourself, then you can get away with
it. But if you plan on carrying files to other machines, almost every
system has a CD player that you can use the CDs on. Not every machine will
have a Zip drive. And both run about the same price right now.
For printers, remember that most companies make the cheaper models to get
you to buy them, but get you in the long run with re-fill cartridges. Look
for one that will let you re-fill them yourself ($20 for a re-fill kit the
will re-fill about 5+ times versus $10-20+ per cartridge) Or you can buy
one that has separate cartridges for each color, you will not have to throw
out a cartridge that has no magenta ink, but is half full of yellow or blue.
