Thanks Chuck, I'll keep that model in mind.  I discovered the fault here 
with this particular setup.  The power cable for the floppy drive was 
faulty, not the ribbon, I've not come across this before where the there 
was a short in the cable but it was hampering the operation of the system 
continually.  Thanks to everyone for their inputs.
