How long have you had your computer and what do you do with your
computer? If all that you do is surf the web, check email, and maybe play
an occasional game or a little work then defragging the drive probably
won't need to be done very often. How large is your hard drive, go into My
Computer and right click on the C drive and click on properties to see how
large it is. When you run defrag you should not have any other background
applications running and disable your screen saver too for it's duration,
or run defrag while in safe mode. Or you can get your hands on a third
party defrag tool like Symantec's Speed Disk

http://www.cleandisk.com/voptme.htm to dramatically speed up your defrag
time and get on to do the things you really want to do.
