While power defrag shuts down programs before it defrags, it shows a lot
of scattered clusters marked in red which it refuses to move. I have
gone back to the defrag in win 95 which does not have this problem. ...

Harold, one thing that can cause Defrag to do crazy things (or not work
at all) is when you set your Virtual Memory (swap file) minimum/maximum
settings to fixed values. If you have, try changing back to "Let
Windows manage" ...John.Eichenlaub

This is the first time I've heard of this, and I've always run with a
fixed swap file since starting with 95. How does a fixed swap affect

Well, this gets very interesting now; an opportunity for Sherlock Holmes
to do some experimenting. I'll compare the defragmenting with my fixed
swap setting (which I had done as suggested some time ago by this group)
against a setting that I'll allow Windows to manage. Something tells me
this is not it as I did my own virtual memory setting some time ago and
this strange behavior (not mine) just recently started.
Something also tells me that my computer is due for a "complete
recovery" of the system (System Recovery in Hewlett-Packard, Quick
Restore in Compaq; they all have their own name for it). MSWord refused
to go into "restore" position. I click the "double square" button and it
minimizes ("if it's not one thing, it's another;" quoting Gilda Radner
in one of her skits).
