Thanks for the reply, Keith. I followed your intructions; I even checked
the "mute" box, but I still get this intense screetching sound of the
dial-up when I connect to my ISP. I can turn the master control all the way
down and mute it but then it kills all the sounds. Thanks anyhow.

You might try this. Double click on the speaker in the systray to bring
up the controler. Now click on the options then make sure the advanced
control is checked. This will bring up an item called Line In Balance,
but it also has a volume control and a muting option. Not sure if this
is where its coming from, but worth a try.
