You have great imagination. In general, you CANNOT copy PROGRAMS between
computers and OSs unless they are DOS programs that have no updates to the
Windows registry and they are contained totally within their own directory
and have no special commands in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS.
You CAN copy DATA between computers and OSs.
All programs that were installed under Win 95 will have to be reinstalled
under Win 98.
After installation you could copy the data from Win 95 backups to the new
Win 98 directories.
I'll give an example of a Win program. Let's say you had Eudora installed in
Win 95. You want to backup and save all:
*.ini (personal settings)
lmos.dat (keeps track of last message read from the server)
nndbase.txt (default address book)
rcpdbase.txt (recipient list)
*.fol directories (folders containing mailboxes)
*.mbx files (mailboxes)
*.pce files (signature, filters, mailbox names)
*.toc files (table of contents files)
Optional (directories that you may also need to copy):
attach (may contain attachments; JPG, GIF, ZIP, GZ, TXT, PDF, etc.)
nickname (may contain other address books)
plugins (if you added additional plugins)
scripts (modem scripts for ver. 3.x)
sigs (may contain signatures)
stationery (or stat) (may contain stationery files)
After installing Eudora under Win 98 you would copy the Win 95 backups and
overwrite all files listed above with the backup versions.
Confusing to say the least. Each and every program has its own files that
should be backed up and copied to the new program install under the new OS.
Best bet. I did this when migrating my programs from Win 95 to Win 98. I
backed up all data files for each installed program and put them in their
own directory on a ZIP disk. (You could do the same on a CD). I found out
what the data files were by different methods:
1. Look for the product's home page on the web and find a FAQ or guide or
whatever
2. Look in the directory of the installed product and look for a FAQ or
guide or whatever
3. See what files have dates and times that correspond to the last time you
accessed the program.
4. Skip all .COM, EXE, and DLL files -- these are not DATA
5. Look in the help file for the program to see if it tells you what to
save and/or backup.
6. Figure out how the program works and what it saves that you need to save.
You could skip the above and just backup the whole program.
Hope you got everything. It turned out that I did or what I forgot didn't
much matter and was easily corrected in the program. For example, I missed
plugins in Eudora.
NOTE: Any registry hacks that you performed under Win 95 will be lost and
will have to be re-created anew under Win 98.
NOTE: All the customizations that you had under Win 95 will have to be done
again under Win 98.
Probably other things here that I forgot to mention.
Another method. Copy the old Win 95 to the new drive and then upgrade that
with Win 98.
