Hi Guy and all,

I have done what you are considering with one exception. I did not
format the drive. First, let me say that I was surprised that the
following process went smoothly and without a single problem. Your
experience may be different. Definitely copy your entire hard drive to
another drive before doing this. Also, check the manufacturers' websites
for your hardware components to verify they have drivers for Windows98,
or that they will even work in W98. Here it is: Use a Windows Start Up
disk to boot the machine THAT WILL ALSO load the necessary files to run
your CD-Rom. A Windows98 StartUp disk should work for this. Your screen
should stop at "A:\>". At this A: prompt, you will next rename the
win.com file. To do so, type REN C:\Windows\win.com win.co_ and press
the Enter key. Put the Windows98 Cd in the CD-Rom. Go to your CD-Rom by
typing D: and press Enter (assuming the CD-Rom is drive "D"). If the
screen displays, "D:\>", type setup, make a giant wish, and press Enter.
Good luck, you may need it. I'd better say that I assume no liability if
things go wrong because they could - even if you are an experienced tech.
