Hi Elaine and Peter,
Are you guys using some sort of security/non-registry changing programs?
I'm using W98SE. I do not go into Msconfig and make any changes. When I
open the Task Scheduler and tell it to Stop Using Task Scheduler in the
Advanced Menu, close the Task Scheduler box and then reboot, it does not
come back in the Windows system tray. It is not running in the
background as some sort of hidden program. It also does not even appear
in the MSCONFIG Startup menu. Disabling Task Scheduler is not the same
thing as turning it off. So, are you guys using a different version of
Windows, Norton, or some registry protector?

It will return the next time you turn the computer on. I have never been
able to permanently disable it via the taskbar icon, although probably
using
msconfig and removing the check in startup might work. Since I do allow
critical updates I have never removed it.

In addition to turning off the Task Schedular from the system tray icon,
you also need to run MSCONFIG and uncheck the box in the startup group.
I've had it totally turned off for the past couple of years.
