Ok, so I guess I am WAAAAY behind times as far as networking:-(. Here's the
deal: At work I am trying to connect two PC's. One a 1GHZ gateway, which
apparently has some sort of modem/nic in it. The Other is a Compaq, which I
installed a Dlink 10/100 NIC in.
Well, since I don't know diddly about the new PC with it's modem/NIC, I
removed the modem/nic and installed a Dlink NIC identical to the one in the
Compaq. After a day of frustration, I finally got each PC to see "itself".
The cable I have was provided by a local networking company, and I was told
it would connect two pc's together. It has written on the cable "category 5
patch cable", and has the plugs at each end which connect to the NIC's.
I "guess" that eventually, if I have the proper equipment, that I will
manage to get these two PC's connected. I have successfully networked a
couple of PC's together a while back, but I am far from comfortable with the
process.
My questions to you guys are:
1. As far as the modem/nic...how the heck does that work? There is only one
place to plug into it, and it fits a phone line, not an RJ45 type plug. Is a
hub required to use this card, and does it have to be a special one? (guess
I am out of touch with hubs as well) Any good websites to point me to??
2. Is the CAT 5 patch cable what I need to connect these pc's?
This will be my final act at this job, and I will happily join the ranks of
the unemployed next week. I'd like to leave them having done a good job with
this. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be able to spend more time here
on the list.
