We have been experiencing a problem with a client's machine. It started out,
innocently enough, when we attempted to install Norton Anti Virus 2001. She
already had McAfee (subscription had expired at least one year ago)
installed on the machine (Dell 700 mhz, Win 98, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive
of which 8.3GB is used) and, at Norton's suggestion, we uninstalled McAfee.
The NAV install went well but when we went to reboot, we received a message
stating "While initializing device IOS: Error: An I/O subsystem driver
failed to load. Either a file in the ./iosubsys directory is corrupt or the
system is low on memory". Windows would not boot. The only way we got the
machine to boot was to reinstall Win 98 over itself. The machine was then
functional but without virus protection.
We subsequently checked Symantec's web site and found that it was apparently
a known problem to which they provided two solutions. One involved adding a
line for maxfilecache to system.ini (in the [vcache] section) and the other
involved a registry change that delayed the starting of navapw32.exe.
Yesterday we tried them both. Neither one worked. We also tried installing
the program GoBack so we would have a fallback position. However, on
rebooting after installing GoBack, we got the same ios message! It seems as
if certain programs cannot be installed on that machine. Subject machine has
29 objects in the iosubsys subdirectory taking up 1.48 MB. We compared that
to an old Dell (Win 98) that we own which has 20 objects taking up 762 KB.
Also, subject machine has an Adaptec CD-RW, if that is relevant.
Does anyone have any thoughts or potential solutions to this mystery? The
client does not want us to reformat the hard drive - financial issue. Can
anyone think of anything short of that?
