FYI, this is not always the case. I was supplied with two
basic types of filters (internal PCI DSL modem from
BellSouth, and I know Verizon does the same). The filters
that go before OTHER devices (like telephones, fax machines,
answering machines, anything other than the modem that uses a
phone line), plus a 'micro filter' that MUST be placed ON the
data line before the DSL modem.

Ralph,
DO NOT install a filter on the Data Cable that you connect
to your DSL modem. I use a splitter "Y" at the wall plug to
separate the Phones and Modem.
The DSL line filter is to be installed ONLY on the line going
to each phone, fax, etc.
These are the instructions for my WESTELL SBC modem.

HTH,

Ed

Peter,

I am more than a little surprised that installing the
filters/buffers
would cause damage to the computer.

Since the package I have ordered from Earthlink, to install
DSL on my
system, includes several filters to use on the line, I am
very
interested in knowing why they would cause damage. I would
think they
would be for filtering out noise from the line before getting
to the DSL
modem. It looks like it will take several weeks before I get
the
package.
