I've been using the free F-Prot (for DOS) and the free Inoculate-It for a 
long time and both of them have sometimes detected "dirty" stuff that 
Norton and McAfee have missed. Their updates are pretty regular and 
frequent (more so in the case of Inoculate-It).

IMHO there's just no point in using any not-free anti-v***s utilities.
