I would be interested if you have a config.sys file, and if you do, what it
contains.
What you are having take place on your system, I have seen happen myself
occationally, especially for sound and similar cards, BUT only if there is
a config.sys file, and it is loading related drivers for the card. If the
drivers and related are getting loaded from the config.sys file, and they
find that the required values it wants are not present in the autoexec.bat
file, either due to the autoexec.bat file missing or having it containing
the wrong values, the driver will, believe it or not, make the changes IT
wants to the autoexec.bat file, even if YOU dont want them to be made.
For example, I had a Creative Labs Live MP3+ 5.1 card in my system before
my current Audigy replacement card. One of the choices you get when you
install the Live card software is the software required for Dos operations.
UNFORTUNATELY, one of the lines that it would put in the autoexec.bat file,
if you were loading Windows and not Dos, would generate an error condition
- the error was harmless BUT it was an error I did not constantly want to
happen whenever I would reboot the system and have it go into Windows; if
you booted directly to Dos, there was no error.
One thing to clarify with my system - I have a menuing type config.sys and
autoexec.bat configuration, so things are setup so that I can boot into Dos
directly or into Win98SE directly.
So I would change the position of that line to go into the section in my
autoexec.bat file dealing with Dos booting. Would the card software let the
line remain where I wanted it - NO!! It CONSTANTLY would change the
location of that stupid line so it would always get moved to the wrong
location.
So what you are describing, especially if driver info was getting loaded
for the card from the config.sys file, I find very easy to understand. It
is one of the few cases where the normal rules which govern the config.sys
and autoexec.bat file operations is not normally seen as expected. Like all
other "absolute" rules, they prove out, at one time or another, to
generally NOT be "absolute."

Well Ralph, I went into win98 and deleted my autoexec.bat, shut down,
restarted and guess what, it was recreated. It is required for the sound
card and it's DOS capabilities only on my win98.
