I couldn't connect to the internet Saturday night. Sunday I called my ISP
help line 5 times. Monday the man across the street brought over his
external modem but had the same problem. So took his off and reloaded the
drivers for my modem. Uninstalled my ISP and reloaded the software. I have
Netzero as a backup ISP and it didn't work either, that's how I knew the
problem was on my computer not the ISPs. I uninstalled Netzero and
reinstalled it , still didn't work.

Spent a day moving files I wanted to keep over to my second hard drive
as a back up incase something happened. So tonight I decided to install
WinXP over my current configuration. It got to a point where there was 34
minutes to go and I got the blue screen of death and it rebooted and got to
the same point again and it just did that over and over.

I called the place I bought the computer and asked them if I should shut
down since I couldn't get the computer to stop. He just laughed and said it
didn't matter what I did at this point. I'd have to bring it down and they
would need to totally reinstall WinXP. Well I thought for a while, then
decided to go over to neighbors and download a WinXP bootdisk off the
internet. Mind you its 8:30 pm. I go over to www.bootdisk.com and download
the bootdisk but it is 4 megs and won't fit on a floppy. So I come home
empty handed. I had turned the power off on my computer to get it to stop.
When I turn it back on it just goes right back into the setup loop of blue
screen of death.

So I go in living room and turn tv on and I'm thinking what do I need a
WinXP boot disk for. So go back to computer and put a Win98 bootdisk in. I
got it to boot after formatting the hardrive and changing from NTFS to
FAT32. Then I put my Win98 disk in and loaded Windows 98 on. Then I got the
WinXP disk and told it to do a complete install. Then I had to change my
file format back to NTFS. Then it took almost an hour to load WinXP. Now my
computer is just like it was the day I bought it except for one thing. The
modem couldn't be found.

Loaded my ISP software on and it couldn't find the modem. Did a new
hardware search and had to load modem drivers on from CD . Finally got on
internet about 11 pm.

So what caused my original problem of not being able to connect to
the internet? I tried a different modem, two different ISPs. Uninstalled
both ISPs and reinstalled. I use Wal mart.com and it would go to step five
if anyone is familiar with it, similar to Compuserve. It would say I'm
connected and show the speed but could never pass the ID and Password info.
It would just redial the next number and then the next number until it ran
out of numbers to dial.

Any ideas are well come. I was using the free Grisoft antivir*s software
and never heard of this type of vir*s anyway.
