My novice comments:

Chasing most pings is usually a waste of time. Many are
attributed to your isp. The one scenario where some action is
prompted is when someone is hitting you so many times, normal use
of your connection is impaired.

I had a poorly setup server banging me last year. I visited the
<business> website and the bloody thing pinged me for hours. It
took 3 or 4 emails to the provider to get it offline.
