I'm posting this in hopes others can avoid some of the BS I went through with the Windows update site. I HOPE, boy do I hope, that someone from MS is on this list!!!
The last several patches/updates I installed from the windows update site (where it SCANS your PC for what is needed) rendered computers over here USELESS!! I am NEVER installing another MS update again!! MANY times this has happened before. 4 times with so called "driver updates" that for each respectively, rendered the sound card, (ESS Allegro 4 channel PCI), video card (ATI AIW 128 Pro 32mb AGP), Promise ATA 133 controller card, and on another mobo the Promise integrated RAID, all USELESS!! Yet another time that comes to mind was another "driver update" for the HPT 366 controller on a Soyo mobo. After installing it, the ONLY way to removed the yellow marks in the device manager it caused was a reformat! >:( And, guess what, a few days after that, they FINALLY removed if from their website, evidently I was among many that sent them hate mail over this. As for the updates, at LEAST TWICE. Most recent being one just added to the update site (for win98 users) "Q314147: Security Update". After installing that POS, this PC would NEVER BOOT!! Restoring the registry didn't even fix it! And contrary to what the MS Jerks state, there IS NO "uninstallation" for it!! Took me several hours to repair what this update destroyed. Needless to say I did NOT install it on any of the other PC's. The other two times was for "Security Update, March 7, 2002" and "Security Update, March 4, 2002". One or both of these caused OE to take a FULL MINUTE to open and hang up the PC's during that period of time! Was not just the computer either, it happened on ALL of the computers over here. So everyone, BEWARE of updates from the windows update site!!! DO NOT trust these imbeciles!! You'd think they'd have the "intelligence" to TEST patches or drivers and make sure they work before they upload them for millions to "Contaminate" their computers with. Now I know why so many hate M$ products and use Linux and MAC's!! If I'd have the time to learn all over again a new OS and platform, I would have changed long ago. All I can recommend is if you've gotten this far with their updates not screwing anything up, STOP THERE! The next time you reformat, or install a new HD, etc, only install updates to the point where you are now! Unless you have your HD 'mirrored' and can go back & restore in a click, don't risk installing any new ones! (My 'restore' backups I made unfortunately were a few months old). -Clint God Bless Us All Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
