Ed,

I am not disagreeing with you at all with regard to the fonts, since that
makes perfect sense. BUT, then I have the question of why are they offered
as an update feature with regard to Win9x/Me, but I have never seen them
offered as an update feature for my Win2K system at work??? This has
puzzled me for quite some time, since on my home system, with Win98SE, when
I updated the system with a particular version of IE (can not remember
which vesion now - maybe when I went to IE 5.01 or 5.5), it all of a sudden
offered this update with a ton of languages.

However, when I updated my Win2K system at work with SP-1 and then SP-2,
when each respective pack was available, I never have seen the languages on
the list of available updates. Unless it was automatically a part of either
the initial install or part of the service packs, they would not have been
installed I would think. Or would they have been a part of the version of
IE for Win2K and not a part of the version of IE for Win9x systems????

With regard to WinME, the big problem seems to have been Microsoft itself
since the issues comes back to timing, and where things were at with the
development of XP, especially for home users. Since the business community
was still very happy with the release of Win2K at the time, this was not
looked on as a problem for Microsoft, but the home/small business market
was, since it had been some time since Win98, even with SE, had been
released. So they ended up releasing ME at the time to get something "new
and exciting" out in the public's eye. BUT, in many ways, since it was half
way between Win98SE and XP home, it turns out not to have been the best
decision on Microsoft's part to have released it. It, like XP to follow,
especially with regard to home users, would require new drivers for
especially hardware but also to an extent software. Not to the extent has
been seen with XP, since it still had much of the 9x base to it, but still
a problem none the less.

So it has proved to be a mixed bag with the individual system - with some
people, they have absolutely no problems of any kind with ME while for
others it has proven to be a ROYAL headache.

Ralph,
To answer your question about the Language downloads.
Folks that download programs in ANOTHER Language
probably need the "language fonts" from these upgrades???

There's apparently NO need for anyone else to download these
unless they intend to use a different language.

I NEVER select any of these language downloads, and I
have never had any problems with Microsoft upgrades either, as
a few others have mentioned.

I also use Win-Me & Win-XP as a dual boot on two systems, and
contrary to what a few others have mentioned about having problems
with ME, I have used this system since it came out over a year ago
and have NEVER had a problem with it on any system. I have installed
and used ME on 6-8 different systems with no problems. In fact, ME
loads faster than XP on the 2-dual boot systems.

Clint,

I am most thankful that you can check or uncheck the boxes at the site,
since there are others as well I never have and never will download, and
get tired of seeing them constantly showing up on the update page.

BUT, I still am wondering what in the world do all the lanuage downloads
that show up on the update page are actually for - have any idea??? They
sure dont seem to do anything from what I have seen in the past, even if
you download any of them and have them installed.
