Vern,
I recently had a similar problem with
a NEW WD-80GB drive. In my case, I could format the new
HD if it was jumpered, either as Master, or Slave when
connected as a DUAL drive.
However, when I tried to boot with it as Single Drive,
the system reported no IDE drive. The Low Level format
was bad, and a replacement did the job.

On my Western Digital,
SINGLE installation - NO jumpers required
DUAL installation (Slave) Jumper pins 3-4
DUAL Installation (Master) Jumper pins 5-6

HTH,
Ed

Subject: PCWorks: hard drive problem

I took my daughters old (one year old Maxtor) and put it in her new computer
as a slave. New Dell computer doesn't recognize it. Tried jumpers in many
different places and in some it hangs the computer on boot at other it just
doesn't see the hard drive. Even tried taking the cable off the cd rom and
jumping the hard drive as master for the second IDE but the computer didn't
see the hard drive there either. Brought her hard drive home and
disconnected my slave drive and put hers in and it doesn't see her drive.

Any ideas or reasons why this hard drive is not seen by either her
computer or mine?

Thanks
