A friend has had a problem since Oct. 1 logging in with a phone connection
after 7 PM. Countless visits by the phone company have found nothing. Her
ISP (Earthlink) found no reason. I lent her my laptop, and she was
consistently able to connect with that (using the same plug and phone jack).

She finally took the fairly new computer back to the shop that built it.
They reinstalled/updated modem drivers. Problem persisted.

Today, she finally unplugged every electrical connection (appliance) in her
home, and replugged them one by one. She thinks she has discovered that if
her overhead light in her computer room is on, she cannot connect. Turning
off the light allows her to connect. Probably she wasn't using the
overhead light during daylight hours.

This is not a fluorescent light. Is there now a valid reason (i.e.
dangerous condition) to call an electrician? Why would my laptop work and
not her desktop, using the same plug and the same phone jack?
