To a point, yes. More accurately it's ISP connection type
than "server". As for as surfing (internet speed),
>GENERALLY< the most importing thing first is connection
(DSL/cable/T1, etc) is going to be faster than dialup
regardless*. Next is using IE6 (I've always noticed IE is
MUCH faster than NS...and oddly enough; NS7 is slower as least
on these PC's than NS4.x!) Next comes your CPU setup.
Reasons is due to the small file sizes that are usually
involved and transferred while browsing, most pages being
roughly ~30k in size. If you are browsing some HUGE pages
(several hundred K in size each), then of course this order
may change some and give more of a precedence for CPU/PC speed
over browser type.

I personally noticed a marked speed increase while on the net
when going from a PII to PIII, then going from a PIII to P4.
This is not just due to the CPU speed increase, but to the
larger amounts of cache, and/or FULL speed L2 cache as
compared to half-speed L2 in the case of the PII. However,
the increase in speed was not nearly as much as going from
dialup to DSL/cable.

*Exception would be when you are using a cable connection
during peak hours. In my experience I can speak for this
first hand. It CAN slow down to that slower than a dialup!
That's why I like DSL better.

Reading Liz's email below made me think of something that
happened at our
local duplicate bridge center the other day. I mentioned to a
man who came
to my table to play that just a few months ago I had purchased
a new HP
Pavilion 7975 with 512 Megs RAM, Pentium 4, 80 Gigs hard
drive, Windows XP
Home Edition, 8 kilobyte primary memory cache, 256 kilobyte
secondary memory
cache, and then I changed from just a regulal local server to
Adelphia Cable
. I told him that the speed difference is spectacular. The
man is about my
age (77) and, though retired, claims to be a computer whiz!
His comment to
me was that my computer had nothing to do with speed, that my
SERVER was the
only thing that affected my speed. I had a perfectly good
3-yr old HP
computer, which I gave to my grandson, with just about all the
qualities Liz
mentions about hers. I said to the man, "Then for more speed,
all I needed
to do was keep my old computer and change to Cable and my
speed would be
just as fast as it is now on my new computer." His answer was
a decided
"Yes."

Now, all you gurus who have helped me in the past, please tell
me if my
"friend" was correct!!!!!! (Gee, I'd love to go back to that
smart aleck
with a printed answer from you saying he is wrong! I know
this is not a
Christian attitude, but he was so condescending when he was
talking to me!
LOL) Thanks, Ann Parker
