Sounds to me like he's got more than one thing going on.....what I would do,
if it were me, would be to set his bios so it can boot from the CD...then
put the XP CD in and reboot.  The XP CD itself is bootable...so there's no
need to make a boot disk

Once he boots to the CD, there's an option to repair XP....try that
first...if that doesn't fix it, then I would reinstall XP from the CD...no
need to format, cuz XP will give him that option when he reinstalls.
