I've forwarded the two messages to my brother, who will hopefully take his machine to a mutual friend I trust to get the job done, since this might be a bit above his level. Being literally half way around the world from him, it is hard to talk him through the steps without being able to connect to his computer and look at what his problems are. I'll recommend he ask C*****t C**y/Compaq to get a copy of the recovery disks to him.
It looks like he *does* have XP-Home, so it might not be as easy to help him as I thought, since most of my experience over the past 4 years has been with NT/2000.
