To be honest, I had heard that too, but after doing so for quite some time now (I heard this after I started doing so), I have yet to have any problems. Maybe the CDs they were talking about were the ones you burn yourself? To me, it looks like the ones you purchase have more of a coating on the top side (paint, ink, whatever), and maybe that is why I haven't had any problems so far.
