Thomas and David, The ONLY kind of writing instrument that I have personally found to be a problem is those that can penatrate the top layer of material on a CD - since the bottom, where it is burned as well as read is widely separated from the top, outmost surface, as long as what you use does NOT penatrate the top layer and cause a problem all the way to the bottom, you should have o problem using that pen on the CD.
Every company I have worked for, and organization as well, as used permanent black felt tip type markers to mark on CDs, whether commercially made or home burned, and it has never been a problem. It does make a permanent label on the CD without any problem to being read. The solvent that is used in those pens can cause problems with porous material, such as paper, cloth, and similar, but not impervious material such as a CD. On the other hand, pens such as ballpoint and similar, or pencils, or a TOTALLY different subject - they can and very often DO destroy through the top to the read side of the CD, and destroy the CD permanently. To use them, you need to use a non-bleeding label to write on, and use the written label to put on the CD.
