Hi Harold.......... I've been thinking..........the problem may be file association related.
Click on My Computer Click View from the menu bar Click Folder Options. Select the File Types tab Scroll the list, and see if you have MSWord 2000 associated to open a .doc file.........Hope this helps and if this is not the correct answer someone will correct me.........!
