Anybody can live without a computer. They are just like any other 20th century invention that we now take for granted and use all the time.

Prior to PCs the US didn't have an epidemic of obesity, adult onset diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome, vision problems, and a whole host of other problems generated by setting in front of a monitor for hours on end.

Personally I still love computers and always have since I first started working on an IBM 1620 in June 1964. I have had PCs since 1979 and still have a love-hate relationship with them. The internet has allowed me to have e-mail relationships with people from 136 countries (due to my mailing list and FAQ).

Currently my PC, the Internet, as well as Street Atlas USA and Topo USA has allowed me to plan, purchase a touring bicycle, and develop a bicycle tour -- my latest passion. The array of information that can be found via the Internet is mind-boggling and is the one reason I still enjoy computers so much.

However, even with all that is available via the Internet, I still enjoy the paper version of most everything, so I still buy books (lots of them) as I really enjoy reading. Reading is probably the hobby most replaced by computers and is the answer to your question " what did people do before 30 years ago when they had no computers? "
