Group, we've talked a lot at the list lately on "Spyware Guard" and "Spyware Blaster". I made a comment that I would leave Spyware Guard running in the background to see if it worked. Well, it doesn't work, nor does Spyware Blaster. (In the case of "Blaster" it doesn't have to be running in the BG, you run it once and it adds tags in the registry to PREVENT you from getting what's in it's database, then you update it periodically). "Guard" works the same way, except it must be running in the BG since it doesn't place tags in your registry.
Yesterday I ran a scan with SpyBot & AdAware and they BOTH found something called "MSupdater.exe". It was in my Startup folder, but not visible under the startup folder under "programs" in the "start" menu. It was under "documents and settings" and "all users", then that startup folder. Also note that Spy Sweeper DID NOT find this program either. So....with Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster running, they prevented nothing. Spy Sweeper failed in finding this spyware, and SpyBot and AdAware were the only two that found it. This is NOT to say to not use ALL of these programs, because one WILL find what another will MISS. This only proves again my point of needing more than one, preferably ALL of these type programs you can find. I will continue to run SpyBot, AdAware, and even Spy Sweeper even though it missed this particular piece of spyware. However at this point I will no longer have Spyware Guard running in the BG. If it missed one, it will certainly miss others. I also noticed a feature in SpyBot I never previously noticed. It's the "Immunize" button. I don't know how I missed it before, it could have been added there during an update. I activated it, and it DOES indeed work (yet missed MSupdater.exe) but it WILL stop you from getting things. Since activating it, it has stopped 3 "infections". A warning window popped up at these times asking if I "wanted to download [whatever], a known spyware threat". I of course said "no" and it prevented the download of what was probably a control that would have gone into the "Downloaded program files" folder. I may guess that in the upcoming days or weeks, ALL of these programs will have definition updates that will (in the case of SpyBot's "immunize" feature, Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster) will PREVENT you from getting this, and it the case of Spy Sweeper will correctly identify this specific threat. -Clint God Bless Us All Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ) ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
