I installed a PCI Firewire card in my Dell about a year ago to capture video from my Cannon DV video camera. Worked fine. No problems.
Recently I added to my external drive collection (which I use for backing up my video and other large files) by purchasing an ION Drive 160 gig USB2.0/Firewire connected drive. It worked fine. Until... I had not taken a video in a while, but did so over Thanksgiving and yesterday (I did a video walk through of my new work site). When I went to capture the video I ran into all kinds of problems (well, actually one: it would not capture). Pinnacle Studio 8 (with the newest beta files installed) locked the system up so bad that I had to pull the power plug. Premiere 6.5 and Sonic MyDVD just gave errors. After unsuccessfully trying to blame the software, the camera, the firewire cable, etc. I finally realized it was the fact that the camera and the ION drive were both plugged in. Not only did I need to have the drive powered off (which actually made no difference) I had to pull the firewire cable from the drive! After I finally figure this out, I was able to capture my video without a problem! Has anyone heard of firewire problem in Windows XP Pro like mine above??? It is not a big deal, and if I want to use both at the same time I can always use the USB2.0 connection on the drive. But I thought you could use Firewire devices at the same time, like you can USB!!?? ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
