I just purchased the Canon i860. I was comparing it to an Epson of similar price $150. The prints were similar, but the big thing is that the canon does not use chips in the cartridge while the Epson does. That means that third party carts may or may not work in the Epson while they will in the canon. Both were 3 or 4 cart colors. The canon has 4 (black + 3 colors, all individual) and an additional larger black for text printing. This should save on the photo carts for color and if one goes empty, I don't have to buy the full 3 color cart. The other thing I found with the canon, it uses a separate, replaceable print head (dropin) which makes for very easy maintenance down the line. The photos that I have printed so far are great. I haven't used any of the high gloss paper that I saw the epson printed on so can't make a full judgment there. I have had an Epson in the past and the Epson carts didn't give me very good photos. I found a third party ink which did a fantastic job and I used those for over two years (the printer is about 7 or 8 years old and finally died). So far, the canon is better than those that I did with the third party ink. Its got many more controls than I had with my earlier printers, (Epson or for a short time cheap lexmark)(.

Does anyone know of the best photo printers around $100-150? A
while back when I was looking I was fixed on the Epson 925 and
Canon S820, and today they still seem to hold their own with
even their new models, some of the newer models not even as
good. I read professional reviews on both of these and others,
and these seemed to be the best for the $. My concern is what
users say about them after having them for several months. In
the case of the Canon, the print head needs to replaced too
many times. In the case of the Epson, ink clogging up. Can
anyone that uses either of these (or any photo printer) for
several months vouch for their long-term quality? Or if anyone
knows of any better quality photo printers in this price range,
please let me know, and if you're happy or NOT happy with what
you currently use.

I did check out the HP 7300 & 7500 series, but they did not
receive as good photo quality ratings as that of the 925 and
S820. The HP's are also more expensive. Any websites that
reviewed a big list of photo printers would also be nice. I
did see the ones at PCworld. (I need to get one for my Mom.
;-) I don't have one since I never have the need to print out
any images).
