Clint, I have a few friend who have both the Canon and the Epson printers and they all have wonderful things to say about them. The Epson owners in particular have owned only Epson printers.

A couple things which do crop up are the benefit of the clear walled ink tanks on the Canon which are perfect for seeing ink levels clearly. Also with the Epson printers there is a special chip you must buy if you want to use refilled cartridges, otherwise they will always show as empty, http://www.inkjetcartridgeshop.com/SpecialProducts.shtml

The Canon users have not experienced your issue with the print heads, these are not casual users either, they all have home business's and many are in the publishing industry to boot.

Whichever one you choose the number one paper recommended has been the Epson Glossy Photo paper http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/ProductMediaSpec.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=-8776&category=Paper+%26+Media (mind the wrap).

Happy shopping!

Does anyone know of the best photo printers around $100-150? A
while back when I was looking I was fixed on the Epson 925 and
Canon S820, and today they still seem to hold their own with
even their new models, some of the newer models not even as
good. I read professional reviews on both of these and others,
and these seemed to be the best for the $. My concern is what
*users* say about them after having them for several months.
In
the case of the Canon, the print head needs to be replaced too
many times. In the case of the Epson, ink clogging up. Can
anyone that uses either of these (or any photo printer) for
several months vouch for their long-term quality? Or if anyone
knows of any better quality photo printers in this price range,
please let me know, and if you're happy or NOT happy with what
you currently use.

I did check out the HP 7300 & 7500 series, but they did not
receive as good photo quality ratings as that of the 925 and
S820. The HP's are also more expensive. Any websites that
reviewed a big list of photo printers would also be nice. I
did see the ones at PCworld. (I need to get one for my Mom.
;-) I don't have one since I never have the need to print out
any images).
Thanks,
-Clint
