I must tell you that I am not that cheap :o))
I am using win98se (athlon 2000+, 512mb ddr, 120gb hd) just because
I LIKE WIN98SE in my main computer, besides that I have a dell 500e
running xp home + sp1, and another one (duron 1.6) running xp pro
plus sp1. I installed xp just to find out how it feels using an operating
system that is unable to exit to DOS (hats off). And I must admit
that XP behaved quite friendly when I tried to link both computers with
a wireless LAN (I am a network illiterate or worse..) but the one
with win98se refused to cooperate at all!!!
Worst of all, I have my internet acces (comcast cable) on that PC and
I would like to share it with the others every now and then. (the others
have dial up acces, anyway) but what I would like most is to share
files between the main one and the other 2 (actually, I am sick of burning and
re-burning cds each time I have to bring a file, and my card reader and 128MB stick
is too slim to transport huge files like movies and all that stuff)
So my first priority is file sharing, and Internet sharing is only a second priority,
if it turns out to be easy enough. So I am not going to purchase a router for that
purpose, but I might install win2k in my main computer, only if I can't find any
other solution to run the wireless LAN.
Maybe there is an external software to run all this mess, maybe I have to
stop all this nonsense and read half a dozen books now before going on.

For the best USB funcunablity I suggest Win XP and for networking Win2k or WinXP. That is why I suggested what I did. I have worked on a friends PC recently and Win98 took too much work to troubleshoot.
Now only if I can get him to get 2 128 meg RAM and Win 2k or WIn XP. He is too cheap. He uses the Dial-up his parents get free from Yahoo! DSL which his parents only use the DSL. and he shares the $15 a month AOL plan. (Dials up SBC then opens AOL in broadband mode.)
