Thomas if you have the "immunization" feature of SpyBot enabled, it will do this IF the websites from where you're trying to view or download are on its list of known malware URL's, domains, or IP's. You should have that feature enabled even though it can be a pain sometimes. What I do is disable it if I see I can't get to an area (and watch carefully for anything), then re-enable it when I'm through. It may also be some other anti-spyware programs you run that is doing this. Even though you may not use it but just as an example; Spyware Blaster has "tags" that it places in the registry to keep known malware from getting on your PC. Another similar program may do the same for downloads and possibly an update for it may have enabled these functions without your knowledge.
If you don't have it enabled, and it's know any of your anti-malware programs, and it's happening everywhere, then all I can say is to check the IE options areas. Check the "advanced" tab for any areas within it that has anything to do with downloads or viewing of any objects, then go to the 'security' tab and click 'custom level' then go through all of those settings AND the Java custom settings. There are areas within these areas where downloads an viewing of certain objects can be blocked. That's a long shot since I don't know how these would have been changed in the past few days without your knowledge. Are you updating all of your anti-spyware programs before you run them? That MSN thing sounds like some kind of a redirect by your hosts file. SpyBot is one that has a hosts file lock where it cannot be changed, but you also have to enable it like the immunization area, neither are enabled by default. Open your hosts file in Notepad and see what's in it. On XP it's in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and it may be a hidden file. Disregard what's next to the # symbols. The second issue, is what led me to do some of the above. When atempting to get to msn.com, I get some search page, instead of the actual MSN page. Like I said, all the scans by the above have come back clean, with one exception, which I cleaned up with SpyBot. It was successful, and repeated scans have come back clean. But I'm still unable to get to the page. Every other site is fine, it's only MSN's main page; I can get to the MSN games site, etc. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestiosn are greatly appreciated, as I'm plumb out of ideas. :) Thanks!
