Are we talking about the same thing? Spybot S&D from http://security.kolla.de is free, as are the other two I suggested. No, of course you don't have to pay for this kind of stuff, though some of them do have a pay-for version ("professional" or whatever) and others coax you to give a donation.
Although it's a good prog, SpybotS&D has been criticized for its very clunky and amateurish interface.
