Hi Tom and all, I have to do this task often with Windows 95, 98, Me, and 98 SE. (Good luck trying this with OEM versions of Windows XP though!) Yes it leaves junk behind, but you don't lose your programs or data, and you can get away without having to do backups. This is particularly useful when one's hard drive survives some catastrophic computer event and time is of the essence. My success rate with this process is about 80%. The sound not working right consistently is the usual problem in the other 20%. Go into Safe Mode at the first bootup after physically installing the hard drive into the different machine. Go to Device Manager and remove everything you can. Reboot after removals. You will be prompted to run the add new hardware wizard; do so. Sometimes you may have to remove multiple instances of the same device afterwards, but you should be to bring it around after removing them and rebooting. Be sure to have the new computer's hardware drivers for 98SE available.

You should always reformat unless the other computer is IDENTICAL. If you don't format, you're going to have thousands of "orphan derelict" vxd, dll, etc. files that can cause problems, not to mention a corrupted registry since it's going to have all the old data still in it.
