Another warning in that same safe mode was: "Windows has detected a new MS-DOS resident program named 'COMMAND'. This program may decrease your computer's performance. Would you like to see more information about the problem?"
(I clicked yes). The following information was provided: "[Filename] in Autoexec.bat forces MS-DOS compatibility mode. Windows was unable to identify the specified memory-resident program that was loaded in your Autoexec.bat file. If you no longer need this program, remove it from your Autoexec.bat file. Otherwise, contact the manufacturer of this program to see if an updated version is available. Windows will not perform optimally while this program is loaded." Additional information provided: "Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. Windows was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message that lists the name of the driver or program causing the problem. Because Windows could not identify the driver or program, it has switched to MS-DOS compatibility mode to ensure the program will run. However, this decreases overall performance. To improve performance, remove the program or driver causing the problem, or contact its manufacturer for an upgraded version." 1. The contents of the config.sys file in C:\ is... The only change I ever made was numlock=off (sans quotes) disabling numlock from startup. And again, the computer seems to be working fine; I just don't know why these warnings popped up when opening safe mode (all this because I wanted to do a thorough scandisk in safe mode) ...
