Hi Harold, Try this: Type rEM in front of each statement line of autoexec.bat and config.sys. This way all entries will be ignored until you go back and remove the rEM's . I have it spelled oddly so you can easily recognize and remove them when you're done and not confuse them with your existing REM and rem's. Ignore the dosboot files. Edit autoexec.bat by right clicking and choosing edit. Edit config.sys with notepad. Save it as config.sys with "All files" showing as the filetype (instead of text documents). For Windows 9x, one should always run ScanDisk and Defrag in Safe Mode with the screensaver turned off to avoid the interruptions inherent in regular mode.

HP Computer 3+ years old, 30 gig hard drive, Windows 98... Another year passed and I decided to give the computer a "thorough" scandisk. I found it taking a bit longer than a few hours (didn't realize that my screensaver wasn't helping). After 10 starts (I had it going all night), I went into "Safe Mode" ... When entering "Safe Mode" I got the following warning: "[Filename] in Autoexec.bat forces MS-DOS compatibility mode. Windows was unable to identify the specified memory-resident program that was loaded in your Autoexec.bat file. If you no longer need this program, remove it from your Autoexec.bat file. Otherwise, contact the manufacturer of this program to see if an updated version is available. Windows will not perform optimally while this program is loaded." I have two Autoexec files. If it helps you to understand the above warning, the contents of the Autoexec file are as follows: The one found in C:\ says: @C:\PROGRA~1\AVG6\bootup.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1\SCAN.EXE C:\ @IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE @echo off REM To make a DOS Boot Diskette; See the file C:\DOSBOOT\DOSBOOT.TXT path C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\PROGRA~1\AVG6 @REM SetPower.exe will initialize the USB Keyboard. @c:\windows\system\setpower.exe ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
