I recently suffered through a similar problem. I screamed at Comcast
insisting that it was my cable connection at the pole or coming into the
house. They said no. Finally the connection went completely but returned
when I hooked my laptop directly to the cable modem. Turned out the LinkSys
cable router/switch was losing the WAN (cable) connection even though the
LAN part of the thing still worked fine. Replaced it (it was non-wireless -
I had a wireless access point connected to it) with a LinkSys WRT54G and all
has been working fine since......

Subject: PCWorks: Intermittent internet connection

Help! This is making me crazy! I have a three PC wired network, all running
xp. Connected to it is an access point for a 4 PC wireless network for
internet connection only. this setup has been working flawlessly for nearly
a year now. A few days ago, our internet connection became very erratic, but
no problems whatsoever with the network connection. Of course I have called
our provider (Comcast) and they report no problems.

The other problem I had was that one of the folks on my wired network had a
few "bugs" on his system, which I found (coincidentally?) on the same day we
started having connectivity problems. His machine was infected with the
following:
Exploit-ByteVerify (Trojan)
Adware-SearchAid (potentially unwanted program)
Downloader-IZ (trojan)aka Troj/Small-HG
StartPage-BN (Trojan)
All of these were reported by McAfee Antivirus. After a very good blessing
out, I got on his machine and cleaned everything out, including editing and
deletion of some registry entries, deleting files and running cw shredder in
safe mode. MacAfee appeared to clean the rest.

Sooo..now my question is how likely is it that he "bugs" and the
connectivity problems are related? I had a brand new in the box router that
I replaced the old one with, so I don't think that is the problem. I have
hooked the main PC up directly to the cable modem and was able to get
online...but that does not seem to prove anything because I am able to get
online thru the router as well...but it is very intermittent. I have not
been able to test the direct cable modem hook-up long enough to see if it
will get erratic or not.

I need some help, suggestions, support..anything at this point :-)
