I don't think it's a "disagreement", Hugh is just unaware. Hugh, you're just lucky. Each PC is going to have a different configuration which sometimes will show different updates, and of course each PC is going to be setup differently. You only THINK you need them. If you look in the archives for all of my posts on this subject, you'll understand. In short: just because M$ says "you have critical updates to install", does NOT mean they are for **YOU** specifically. The majority of the updates are not needed if one runs a firewall, and also many updates are only needed if you have specific Services turned on. You need to always read the "Read more..." links under each update at the update site to get the full intent and scope of the update. Currently, there are about 16 updates shown at the update site that I don't need because I run a firewall, and have 25+ unnecessary XP Services disabled. If M$ has never dumped anything on your PC without your knowing, then you must not have Auto Updates enabled, or if so it may be configured differently. Years ago when I used to have AU enabled, all it said was something like "there are new updates for your PC" and "do you want to install them", and it never told you how many, or what they were for. The 2 most recent people I know that told me new updates screwed things up, both said they got no warning, it was all done in the background, and both had CONSIDERABLE damages. As for the damages I've experienced; on SEVERAL occasions specific updates caused at least one of the following: MASSIVE slowdowns in XP, MASSIVE slowdowns with IE, MASSIVE slowdowns in OE, no longer being able to open URL links in separate IE windows from within OE, Java applets no longer working, not being able to boot, and of course numerous crashes and errors. No MS update has ever broken the PC of anyone I know, or know of. MS has never "dumped" an update on my PC that I didn't need. MS has never dumped an update on the PC of anyone I know that they didn't need. It's too bad, and possibly counter-productive that otherwise knowledgable people make these patently false and alarming statements. SP2 willl doubtless cause a problem or two, but it's mostly about security, which is good for all of us. People are also noticing many of their software/programs no longer work.
