You can safely disable ActiveX and many windows scripts by not using IE and OE/Outlook and comfortably enjoy the web. In fact I do it every day. I just don't use IE or OE/Outlook and have none of the apps listed here on my system.

Now with the advent of .Net technologies it is becoming easier and easier still for anyone to write quick and dirty web apps, and boy are they dirty :(

There are so many choices available outside MS for so many that you owe it to yourself to shop around.

Just my 2 cents,

Coming in a little late on this thread, but:

Another nice little program to help, is called BugOff.
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/bugoff.zip
"BugOff: This little app disables three exploits that are commonly used by
browser hijackers (including CWS), thus protecting you from infection. This
does not remove an existing infection! Applicable to everyone that uses
Internet Explorer."

Just run the program, and it disables quite a few settings that sites use to
exploit your Internet Explorer. If you depend on the Windows Help files,
this may not be the tool for you, but for those like myself that never use
them, it helps close the holes in your IE.

Unless you disable all Scripts, ActiveX, and a multitude of other items,
there will never be any way to totally prevent ALL "nasties". And if you
did disable them, would you really want to be online after that?

Thomas
