I tried it, based on Harold's recommendation. It does have some nifty
features for writers, such as links to useful sites and a conversion tool
from smart quotes to straight quotes. Each file is saved with up to four
"pads" for those irrelevant but important brainstorms that occur while
writing.

Those are good ideas, and there are others. I would be happy to use it and
then export the final product to Word for printing.

I'd also like to mention two annoying bugs.

1. It does not have an export feature to Word. It exports to RTF. That means
that N-dashes and M-dashes are converted to regular (shorter) dashes. Tables
are not exported properly. Editors, or those who publish to the web will not
be happy with those limitations. An export option to ANY Windows version of
Word would handle those issues.

2. Shortcuts are different from those in Word. Word's Control-W becomes
Rough Draft's Control-Q. Not a major problem, you say? Perhaps, but if you
have to stop and think which word processor you are using, you can lose your
train of thought. That's a major problem for a writer.

I'd recommend it for a beginning writer who might be intimidated by Word.
However, as he becomes more proficient and wants to use Word's features,
he'll have the problems of switching to Word's shortcuts.
