Hi Larry,

I don't quite understand why if you have open ports you can't the internet
but we'll leave that for another time.

Does this monitoring software use WinXP?

You have a static ip address that your ISP assigns you. That is your
modem's address. The modem plugs into your router which provides a hardware
firewall for your network and lets each of your computers access the
internet. Depending on how your linksys is configured, you local computers
have internal IP addresses that are fixed or assigned by the router's DHCP.
If you are using DHCP you can determine each computer's IP address by typing
ipconfig /all into a command prompt window on the computer. If your router
always assigns the same address to each computer you can leave the DHCP on.
If it changes them when it's rebooted you may have to go to fixed IP
addresses for your network because you are going to have to use machine 2's
IP address to set this up. If you have to switch to manually assigned IP
addresses, use the same range 127.xxx or 192.xxx that the router uses.

I would make sure that computer 2 can access the internet before you start
trying to implement the monitoring software. Make sure the local area
connection on computer 2 is configured properly with the correct access
point and dns data.

Once you get computer 2 to access the internet you have to get the computer
to appear to the outside world like it isn't behind a firewall. You can do
this in two ways. One is to use the DMZ function of your router and put the
ip address assigned to computer in the DMZ info on your router. This puts
computer 2 outside the firewall and any one accessing your bellsouth static
IP will see that computer. You will need to put a good software firewall
like zone alarm on computer 2 to provide some security and then set it to
allow the monitoring software to access to the internet.

The second way to do this is to try the port forwarding feature of your
router. This way forwards specific ports to computer 2 and only puts those
ports specified outside your firewall. I think you would still need to
install a good software firewall on computer 2 just to protect those ports
from abuse.

I'm not sure why linksys couldn't help you on this. It's a pretty common
arrangement.

So get your linksys manual out and take a look at the DMZ and port
forwarding features. Let me know how it goes.

Subject: Re: PCWorks: DNS questions

I have been working on the problem noted below and I have a few
questions that maybe someone can answer.

Let me explain the situation first.
I have computer one which is my shop computer with XP on it.

Computer 2 is used only for a NV 3000 4 camera surveillance system and
also has XP.

I was told that to watch the DSS (Digital Survaillance System) on the
internet I must have a Static IP which comes from Bellsouth my ISP. The
instructions say that 6 ports must be opened. I also found out that due
to the ports being opened I would not be able to access the internet
from computer 2. (This was my original problem and I did not know I
would not be able to use the internet.)

Both computers are behind a linksys router, (WRT54G)and then connected
to the BellSouth Westell DSL modem. The connections are with cat 5 cables.

My question are as follows;

1. Should my computer 2 be assigned the Static IP of 74.xxx.xxx.xx?

2. When I open the ports of both the modem and router must I be on
computer 2? Or are these ports open to both computers?

3. At present for some reason my router is connecting to the
74.XXX.XXX.XX now and when open my browser and type in 74. number I go
to the setup for the router! That does not seem correct to me.

Hope this is understandable as I am very new at this.
