i agree - unfortunately i don't remember where i picked that up that someone 
was making shader replacements for pix_ objects. i was hoping that that person 
reads the thread and speaks up.

in the end pix_takealpha was used because it was decided that the mask stays 
unanimated and the performance was sufficent. thank you for your patch
