Perhaps this bug is not present in another version of Pd packaged for
Ubuntu? On Debian I am using
aptitude versions puredata
which shows me 
$ aptitude versions puredata
Package puredata:                              
p   0.47.1-3    oldstable 500 
p   0.49.0-3    stable 500 
i   0.51.4-1    testing   900
