Have you tried stuffing, or zipping them, before you transmit them?

I create PDFs from Quark 4 as ps files then use Acrobat to distill them.
The files are then sent FTP them to our pre press house. Several files
this month became corrupt. The page would either break into bands of
color or bands that were lighter or darker. Some PDFs containing images
would be perfect except the image would stop, leaving half a picture and
half a white box. Some of the files were from outside, some were pick
ups and some where new creations. Some files would preview fine and no
error could be seen until they were printed. They only consistency I
can find is that all the errors are horizontal in nature. Any ideas?
