Do keep in mind that the process you describe above will remove all non-content elements from the PDF (hyperlinks, bookmarks, etc.) and can also potentially effect colorspaces and shadings as well.
You should ALWAYS use a PDF native reduction tools such as PDF Optimizer in Acrobat 6 Professional, or our PDF Enhancer (http://www.pdfsages.com/enhancer.html).
