I ran into problems with your combination of OSX Quark 6 and Acrobat 6 also
and it took a while to find a stable solution.

I can confirm that Export as PDF generally renders an acceptable file but
one that is bloated in size. I generally use File/Reduce File Size in
Acrobat 6 for a quick size and version reduction (Acrobat 4 so that the PDFs
will import back into Quark successfully). Or I use Advanced/PDF Optimizer
for more control over image compression.

Because of the error message you are getting it may be that saving your
grayscale source files as .eps is creating postscript problems when being
printed to .ps out of Quark. My recommendation is that you resave all of
your source .eps files as .tif files and try that. Also, there is a check
box under Print/Options for "Full Resolution TIFF Output" that should be
checked.

If in Quark you use "Adobe PDF" as your Printer Description and use
Printer/Save as File/Format Postscript as your output option, you should be
able to create quick, normal sized PDFs. I now use Export as PDF as
emergency backup should everything else fail.

Let me know if this helps.
