I tested an 18mb grayscale file (12 x 18). Using the Convert to PDF Command
in Acrobat, the file came down to less than 400k (at 300 dpi). I then used
the built in optimizer in Acrobat, further reducing the file size to around
100k (at 150 dpi). The initial PDF conversion took 10-15 seconds; and the
optimization took 2 seconds.

I maintained the file in grayscale mode (which provides better quality of
there are tones), and eliminates dither. If the CAD drawings have no tone,
they can be scanned in black and white to begin with...and the file sizes
will be smaller yet.

  I am not sure which 'aforementioned' file is. Maybe I missed a part of
this thread. Anyway, my CAD files were large, (actually larger than the 3M
files Bob mentioned - mine were about 10-13M apiece, which is quite normal
for CAD) and had lots of dither. Unfortunately I cannot share due to legal
paranoia...
