A. You need to download and install the Acrobat Distiller ppd from Adobe. B. The PDFWriter is old technology...dropped with Acrobat version 5.0. It's purpose was to help people make simple PDFs (like from Office documents). It would not allow the full embedding and subsetting of fonts, the color space was strictly RGB, etc. etc. etc. If you print to the Adobe Virtual Printer, with the Distiller PPD, you will get a PostScript file which is ready to Distill to make your PDF file. You can include crops and bleeds if necessary. With Distiller, you have a choice of job options for PDFs of different flavors (i.e. press, web resolutions, color spaces, font embedding, etc.). Finally, the PDFWriter couldn't recognize the content in EPS files, so only printed the 72 dpi placeholder. No one should be using the PDFWriter anymore...particularly those who are trying to produce PDFs from page layout programs. Hope this helps answer your question/s.
