Yup, that was a great solution in Mac OS 9 - today it's old school and we don't do it that way...
Now, on OSX, I haven't got a clue how to make a good .ps file to distill.
You do NOT need to - nor should you!
If you choose the Adobe PDF printer that is installed with Acrobat 6, it is doing EXACTLY what you were doing - but all automated! (ie.Adobe PDF creates a PS file from the application's print out and then sends it to Distiller producing a PDF file).
